San Francisco recently marked the Chinese New Year, a big event here with a downtown parade, fireworks and plenty of celebration. We moved from the year of the Ox to the year of the Tiger.

Mozambique's health ministry spokesman says the country's cholera outbreak has now killed 42 people in the northern and central parts of the southern African country. Leonardo Chavane says the disease is spreading, with more than 2,600 cases of people who have contracted the highly contagious yet easily preventable infection this year. He said Saturday that the situation remains worrisome as some provinces hit by cholera are now also affected by flooding, which is likely to spread the disease further.

The Minnesota Department of Health released its weekly update of flu statistics on Wednesday.

Kenya is under a Cholera threat having witnessed several deaths last week while more areas across the country have been put on high alert. Though it was such a shameful incident where over 20 inmates died in Kamiti Maximum prison, the government has now moved to curb the spread of the disease and is now appealing for Shs Sh553 million from the treasury. At the moment, more than 50 other inmates are admitted at both Kenyatta National Hospital and the prison dispensary.

Norovirus primarily spreads in confined communities, such as cruise ships, schools and hospitals. Statewide, 23 cases came from nursing homes and 14 from schools or colleges. At its peak Tuesday, 419 of the 1,838 passengers and 27 of the 849 crew members onboard the Mercury had fallen ill.

Seven people have died in disturbances caused by disinformation about the spread of cholera in the central Mozambican district of Gurue, in Zambezia province, reports the Beira daily paper "Diario de Mocambique". The rumour has been spread that health workers and traditional leaders, far from fighting cholera, are spreading the disease. One of those murdered was the community leader at Tetete, in the locality of Lioma, who was accused of collaborating with health activists in order to spread the disease
